ABOUT THE SHOW: Portland choreographer Carlyn Hudson presents her third evening length performance featuring local freelance dance artists Kailee McMurran, Amy Russell, Lindsay Dreyer, Lupe Martínez, and Anna Olmstead. Something Else consists of five world premiere works accompanied by the compositions of Antonio Vivaldi, Franz Schubert, and George Friderick Handel among others. Each of the five new works has its own subject matter. Scherza, a quintet, illustrates the rage one can feel when confronted with the patriarchal structure of our society. In The Brothers Viviola, a spirited and energetic duet, Hudson and McMurran portray fictional 18th century Italian twin brothers, separated at birth and then re-united to form the greatest stage act of all time. Chariots is a quintet deeply entwined with the classical score it’s set to, and has been greatly influenced by the scene from Fantasia, beloved by Hudson, with the centaurs, cupids, and Apollo riding his golden chariot in the sun. Two solos round out the evening as well as a short dance film that was created during lockdown.
ABOUT THE ARTIST: Carlyn Hudson is an independent Choreographer and a co-founder of SubRosa Dance Collective hailing from Nyack, New York. Her early dance education focused in Classical Ballet and Jazz, before studying at the Conservatory of Dance at SUNY Purchase College, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2008. Carlyn performed as a member of the Connecticut Ballet for two years prior to relocating to Portland, Oregon in 2010, where she joined Polaris Dance Theater before jumping off co-found SubRosa Dance Collective in 2011 and has been producing performances under her own name since 2017.
Carlyn’s work has a witty flavor with a dash of humor noir in a creamy base of impeccable musicality. She has set work at Northwest colleges and universities, in addition to theater productions in Chicago, IL. Her work has been commissioned by Connecticut Ballet and has been presented in their Digital Dance and Ballet Under The Stars programs. Her work has been seen at Chop Shop Contemporary Dance Festival, Union PDX Festival of Contemporary Dance, Unveiled Dance Festival, Pacific Dance Makers, and Ballet Alliance Festival among others. Carlyn continues to instruct dancers of all ages and levels in Classical Ballet, and Pointe in both Washington and Oregon states while producing original works of contemporary dance.
Something Else is funded in part by Regional Arts and Culture Council, and is being co-produced by Echo Theater Company.
